Next-Gen Gaming – The Unreal Engine 5, Epic Games Releases New Footage!

Epic Games have just released a new video showing off the new Unreal Engine 5 on a PS5! The video is really beautiful and an unbelivable step forward in gaming technology. Think about a game world where detail is unlimited. Amazing view distances, realtime global illumination, this is the future of gaming and its here now.

So to put it basically. The engine uses billions of triangles per frame to render everything you see on screen. 3 years of work and research went into this by Epic Games and in particular their technical director of graphics, Brian Karis . UE5 – on next-gen at least – is the realisation of the micro-polygon engine, and despite being demonstrated on PlayStation 5 specifically, Unreal Engine 5 is a cross-platform endeavour, just like its predecessors. ” The PS5, combined with tools like UE5, will enable “nothing but seamless, continuous worlds, and you can have this degree of fidelity going on for as many kilometers and gigabytes as you wish,” CEO Tim Sweeney says.

“The key features we’re debuting will work across all of the next generation console platforms,”

“The key features we’re debuting will work across all of the next generation console platforms,” adds Sweeney. “We don’t have performance comparisons, we can’t share performance comparisons, but this is a feature set you can count on with that generation, particularly micro polygon geometry with the Nanite technology and real-time global illumination with Lumen.”

DF Direct: John Linneman and Alex Battaglia explain their thoughts on Epic’s next-gen showcase.

Epic says the demo shows off what next-generation game consoles will truly be capable of once developers have full access to creative tools like UE5 and the capability to get the most out of new hardware and software driven into Sony’s PS5 and Microsoft’s Xbox Series X.

We will see our first plublic early release sometime in early 2021. Fornite will also be transistioning accross in the same year from UE4. It will run on most High Spec PC’s and older android and IOS devices, including current gen consoles as well not forgetting to mention nintendo switch. But remember that you can’t expect the same kind of fidelity as the next-gen consoles.

“To maintain compatibility with the older generation platforms, we have this next generation content pipeline where you build your assets or import them at the highest level of quality, the film level of quality that you’ll run directly on next generation consoles,” continues Tim Sweeney. “The engine provides and will provide more scalability points to down-resolution your content to run on everything, all the way down to iOS and Android devices from several years ago. So you build the content once and you can deploy it everywhere and you can build the same game for all these systems, but you just get a different level of graphical fidelity.”

The images provided by Epic Games below are stunning. Full 4k PNG’s of this scarely realistic world.

It safe to say that the next few years will be a very exciting time in the gaming world.
